June 3-4, 2010 - Chicago Marriott O'Hare Hotel - Chicago, IL
The AAMC is soliciting abstracts and posters for presentation at
the June 2010 Integrating Quality Meeting. The planning committee
seeks abstracts that illustrate innovative and integrative approaches
to quality across the continuum of medical education and clinical
care in academic medical centers, with a particular focus on implementation
and evaluation strategies.
Abstract Topic Areas
The AAMC is soliciting abstracts for panels and posters on the
following themes and sample topic areas. Abstracts on other relevant
areas will also be considered for the poster discussion sessions.
1. Building an Integrated Approach to Quality in Academic Medical
Centers
- How to develop an organizational strategic approach to quality
(implications for planning, budgeting, staffing/resources, etc.)
- Techniques for building a culture of quality/safety
- Adoption of QI strategies, such as Lean or Six Sigma, across
the organization
2. Techniques and Tools for Integrating Quality and Patient
Safety Education across the Continuum
- Undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education curricula/programs
- Faculty development methods and strategies
- Engaging teams of students, residents and faculty in QI initiatives
- Interprofessional training strategies (e.g. team training, simulation
training, etc.)
3. Implementation: Leveraging Success Factors and Overcoming
Local Challenges
- Organizational/structural challenges (e.g. mixed volunteer and
employed staffing models)
- Overcoming the challenge of limited time available in curriculum/training
programs
- Role of governance/leadership in QI strategies
4. Evaluation Methods for Measuring IQ Strategies
- Measuring the impact of QI training in GME and CME
- Role of various data sources and measures (e.g. Hospital Compare,
UHC database, state level data/reporting, etc.) in education
- Use of reporting systems in training programs
Presentation Format
- Selected presentations will be grouped into 90 minute panels.
Each speaker will have approximately 15-20 minutes for their presentation,
and time will be reserved for group discussion. Abstract proposals
for full panel presentations will also be considered from schools,
organizations and teams.
- Posters that are accepted for presentation at the meeting will
be on-display throughout the program. There will also be two poster
discussion sessions during the meeting.
Review Criteria
- Members of the Integrating Quality Steering Committee will
serve as reviewers. The review committee will evaluate each abstract
based on the following criteria: innovation; integration of educational
and quality initiatives and activities; outcomes assessment; clarity
of presentation; and evidence of building on the literature and
theory of education and quality improvement.
- Abstracts that are not selected for oral presentation will
also be considered for a poster.
Submission Process
Important Dates
- Completed abstracts are due by close of business on Monday,
February 15, 2010.
- Authors will be notified of the review committee's decision
the week of March 22, 2010.

authors must register for the conference. In order to keep the
registration fee moderate for all, the AAMC will not be able to
waive the registration fee or pay travel expenses for presenters.
