July 22-26, 2008 - The Chateaux at Silver Lake- Park City, Utah

Overview

The GIR Leadership Institute is the only program that provide IT leaders the information and tools to understand how to excel at the nexus of academic, research and clinical systems to support organizations as they move to more integrated and data driven models.

Information technology has become a strategic resource essential to the growth and success of medical schools and teaching hospitals. To manage this rapidly expanding area, academic health centers (AHC) need visionary leaders who understand the complex responsibilities required for serving academic medicine.

Program

The institute is focused on IT/IS leaders new to the academic health center environment. Individuals with strong leadership potential, drive, an appreciation of different perspectives, a good sense of humor, and the ability to work on a team will get the most from the program.

The upcoming institute will help participants understand the business and cultural dynamics of the AHC and develop leadership abilities, decision-making skills, and the ability to assess the range of available technology solutions. The program includes small group exercises and problem solving sessions along with real-world examples and case studies.

Major topics of the institute include:

  • Culture of education, research, and clinical environments
  • Governance models
  • Risk management
  • Managing up
  • Negotiation and partnerships
  • Balancing competing missions
  • Business enablers
  • Building consensus and fostering long-term partnerships
  • Thinking like a dean

The institute also includes several pre-meeting readings and assessment tasks and post-meeting educational opportunities such as an alumni listserv, invitations to alumni networking events, and on-going educational offerings. The intense, highly interactive five-day institute is limited to 30 fellows who are nominated by their institution's leadership to attend the event. The Deer Valley setting is magnificent and the food, drink, and accommodations will match the setting. Spouses and significant others are welcome.

Things to Know About Participating

This is an interactive program. If you are selected to participate all fellows must attend the entire institute. Readings and work will be assigned prior to the institute to be completed and brought with the fellow for use in the sessions.

The selection process is highly competitive. Applicants must first be nominated by their supervisor or other institutional leader. The nomination deadline is February 1, 2008.

Fellows' thoughts on the benefits of the Institute:

Collective problem solving experience was a great take away. The case studies were excellent - realistic and thought provoking. Now I always try to consider institutional context in decision making.

The knowledge gained through the discussion group helped me realize the importance of and IT governance structure that views primary IT as an enabler to clinical and business processes. While IT technologies can provide innovative ways to address clinical and business needs, it is the owners of processes that must be engaged.

Having the AHC leaders, representing each of the missions, in one room, candidly discussing leadership issues, decision-making strategies, frustrations, and the joys of the challenges we face. I always try to think up before making a decision. When I do, I sometimes find that I now make a decision that is different from the decision I would have made before the institute.

About the Setting

The Chateaux at Silver Lake is an elegant condominium hotel reflecting the elegance of old world French decor blended seamlessly with modern conveniences and services, just a short walk to Deer Valley Resort chairlifts. The Chateaux's gourmet restaurant, Bistro Toujours, and private club, Buvez, feature eclectic French cuisine.

Salt Lake International Airport serves 16 airlines with over 800 scheduled daily flights. The Chateaux is a scenic 45-minute drive from the airport with several transportation options.

Local Attractions

Known for its Olympic history, Park City is a wonderful place to visit in the summer. There are hiking and biking trails, balloon rides, fishing, and golfing. At nearby Olympic Park, you can experience the G-force of a bobsled ride or enjoy the view down the zip line, then take in some Olympic history in the museum.
