Group on Business Affairs / Group on Information Resources / Group on Institutional Planning 2010 Joint Spring Meeting

May 4-7, 2010 - Westin Kierland Resort & Spa - Scottsdale, Ariz.

The spring meeting planning committee is soliciting proposals for case presentations that focus on new, innovative and collaborative methods to address the issues that impact you most as a GBA, GIP, and GIR member.

This meeting provides a unique forum to promote and learn from the collaborations that occur daily at academic medical centers by bringing together three important professional groups within the AAMC. The committee is particularly interested in proposals from institutional teams that reflect the differing perspectives of the groups. It also encourages proposals that reflect cross institutional collaborations.

The topics identified below are only a suggested list of issues. If there is an issue that is not listed below but you think would be of interest to GBA, GIP, and GIR members, the committee would welcome that submission.

Suggested Proposal Topics

  • Federal stimulus/ARRA issues: role of informatics, job creation, the impact of short-term funding on long-term strategic planning, regional extension centers

  • Financial stress and budget pressures: crisis as an opportunity

  • Health care reform: how it will impact academic medicine across missions - education of students and residents, research, clinical care, electronic health records

  • Benchmarking: sources used, formats for presenting data, preparing to utilize data for "meaningful use" and health care reform

  • Cultivating relationships with the parent campus, hospital, other health sciences and community-models for engagement, communication control and governance

  • Disaster/Business continuity planning: critical incident management, natural, pandemic

  • High performance computing and data centers: build vs. buy, "cloud computing", operations and management of the facility

  • Meeting future educational needs: curriculum redesign, facilities and space, departmental financing, simulations, team-learning, role of informatics, social networking, information delivery

  • Managing institutional resources: sharing resources, administrative efficiencies, consolidation of services

  • Space assignments: productivity, output, yield ratios, use of space, integration of IT, policies

  • Strengthening collaborations within the organization and across missions- internal/external, research/clinical, health professions

  • Sustainability, energy efficiency and awareness

  • Institutional leadership development

  • Models for addressing aging faculty and staff: tenure guarantee, productivity, succession planning

Proposal Guidelines

  • Priority will be given to proposals that are of interest to members of all three groups. We strongly encourage collaboration on proposals between GBA, GIP, and GIR members.

  • Proposals that address topics identified above and that describe an established activity or implemented system are given priority.

  • Breakout sessions will be held May 5, May 6, and May 7. Sessions are 75 minutes long, which should include time for questions. Sessions may draw audiences of up to 75 people.

  • Proposals must be submitted by constituents of AAMC-member institutions and may include consultants (or other non-AAMC members) if considered integral to the presentation. If a consultant or other non-AAMC member is included in a presentation, they are only permitted to attend their session and not the full meeting.

  • If a consultant wants to attend the full meeting, there are a limited number of commercial exhibitor spaces available. This is the only option for commercial organizations to attend the full meeting. Non-AAMC members that are not commercial organizations (i.e. federal and state representatives, other non-profit organizations) are handled on an individual basis. All commercial exhibitor requests and questions about non-AAMC member attendance should be addressed to Heather Sacks at hsacks@aamc.org for more information.

  • Conference fees, travel and lodging: Session participants are responsible for registering in advance for the conference, paying the full registration fee, and securing and paying for travel and lodging.

Please submit proposals by November 25, 2009 via the online form.
