Call for Proposals
Group on Business Affairs/Group on Institutional Planning
2009 Joint Spring Meeting

April 23-25, 2009 - New Orleans Marriot - New Orleans

The Spring Meeting Planning Committee is soliciting proposals for case presentations that focus on new, innovative, and collaborative methods to address the issues that impact you most as a GBA and GIP member.

While dean's office staff, department managers, strategic and facilities planners, and human resources professional are often obliged to deal with the same issues, the perspectives that each brings will differ. The committee is particularly interested in proposals from institutional teams that reflect differing perspectives. It also welcomes proposals that reflect cross-institutional collaborations.

Suggested topics of interest include:

  • Administrative structures of departments - creating a new department, ensuring maximum efficiencies
  • Alternative funding sources for research
  • Class size increase - space limitations, clerkship limitations, budget implications
  • Community-based schools
  • CTSAs - staffing concerns, addressing budget cuts
  • Disaster planning - business continuity, communication, plan implementation, pandemic planning
  • Education issues - curriculum reform/education - financial support of the teaching mission, learning spaces and space allocation
  • Faculty compensation and incentives - how faculty are held accountable
  • Funds flow models
  • Human resources decisions - legal ramifications, financial implications, space considerations
  • Multidisciplinary centers - planning, implementation, guidelines, policies
  • New buildings (wet bench lab, wet research, dry research, core research) - paying for new buildings, assigning space
  • Relationships - school of medicine/hospital; practice plan; industry
  • Simulation labs
  • Space Efficiencies - balancing space needs with affordability, funding research space, renovation of current space, size of the enterprise
  • Strategic planning (medical school, medical school/hospital, campus master, university level) - plan development, implementation, planning processes, benchmarking
  • Succession planning - recruitment, retention, planning for the future

The topics identified above are only a suggested list of issues. If there is an issue that is not listed above but you think would be of interest to GBA and GIP members, the committee would welcome that submission.

If you attended the 2008 GBA/GIP Spring Meeting in San Francisco and there was a session that you would like to hear an update on, please contact Heather Sacks at hsacks@aamc.org. The committee is happy to approach speakers from last year's meeting to see if they would be willing to update their session for this year.

Proposal Guidelines:

  • Proposals that address topics identified above and that describe an established activity or implemented system are given priority

  • Breakout sessions will be held Thursday, April 23, Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25. Sessions are 60-75 minutes long, which should include time for questions. Sessions may draw audiences of up to 75 people. Time slots will be assigned by the Spring Meeting Planning Committee members.
