Who will be responsible for managing our patients or even our own personal health data: the government, the private sector, or ourselves? If leading innovators from the private sector like Google Health or Children's Hospital Informatics Program's (CHIP) take the lead, will this provide the private sector access to (and control of) Americans' personal health data? Or will academic physicians and hospitals develop the necessary electronic tools and efficiently and securely manage patients' health records? In this session, the stakes of implementing electronic management systems for personal health records, the players involved, and current innovations will be discussed.

Medical students typically experience high levels of distress and significant mental health problems such as depression, stress, and burnout. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) has recognized these problems and has established standards for medical schools to establish systems for psychological and psychiatric counseling and the development of programs to promote medical student wellness. Despite various efforts to address these issues, administrators and students continue to be concerned about these issues. The AAMC Group on Student Affairs and Organization of Student Representatives have recently surveyed their constituents to assess their perceptions of mental health problems and resources available to students in order to provide improved services to schools and students.

Objectives:

  • To provide an overview of Student Mental Health Services
  • To provide an overview of institutional and curricular efforts aimed at creating an environment in which students may not only survive, but thrive
  • To provide an overview of the Vanderbilt Medical Student Wellness Program and data regarding its impact on students

To involve participants an opportunity to discuss the issues as well as mental health and wellness programming for students. Emphasis will be placed on institutional strategies to successfully involve students in their wellness.

We will engage in a dialogue on the "educated" patient and what that education means to healthcare providers.

Healthcare in the United States is at a crossroads. While there are many issues plaguing our system, there is mutual agreement that there is a need for change. Not only have legislative changes created some of the most complex loan portfolios in the history of financial aid, but there are also changes that will affect how graduates repay these loans. With Economic Hardship Deferment going away for residents, and the introduction of Income-Based Repayment and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, it's more important than ever to understand repayment plans and strategies. This session will discuss current debt trends and follow the education path of "Dr. Median" to go behind the numbers and examine current options for student loan repayment/forgiveness and their impact during residency and beyond. GEA/GIA/ORR Session: Channeling Institutional Passion into Advocacy Muscle

Delivering your message effectively to elected officials who can influence critical funding streams to your organization is becoming increasingly difficult. Constraints on your legislators' time are rising, as are the numbers of groups competing for limited financial resources. Students, residents and faculty can play a central role in your advocacy efforts as front-line ambassadors to your institution and your mission. Knowing strategies to channel their passion for medicine into constructive, integrated messages takes planning however. Learn methods, like Project Medical Education, for identifying champions across your institution and ways to empower them to carry your message to an achievable end result.
