MedEdPORTAL Annual Meeting Program

Saturday, November 7, 2009

MedEdPORTAL Workshop on Peer Review & Scholarly Refinement

Impartial assessment is an essential component of scholarly review. Peer review is the attentive, unbiased assessment of materials submitted to publication outlets by reviewers and is the very foundation of academic publication. MedEdPORTAL maintains a pool of 800+ nominated expert reviewers that serve as important quality gatekeepers to the system. To evaluate assigned submissions, reviewers must, in part, scrutinize the quality and quantity of information contained in both the provided submission form and in the resource itself. Due to the tremendous growth and continued expansion of MedEdPORTAL, this workshop will serve as a foundation for the recruitment and training of reviewers.

This session will:

  • Explore the history, state of affairs, and future directions of scholarly peer review.
  • Provide an understanding of the MedEdPORTAL peer review philosophy and process.
  • Address practical issues associated with the submission and review of MedEdPORTAL submissions and their respective educational content.
  • Familiarize participants with the MedEdPORTAL peer review form.
  • Address conflict-of-interest policies and procedures as they relate to MedEdPORTAL publications.
  • Introduce participants to reviewer reference materials available today.

MedEdPORTAL Advocacy: Training the Trainer

In 2005 the Association of American Medical Colleges developed and launched MedEdPORTAL as a free publishing venue and dissemination portal to support educators and learners as they create and use on-line teaching materials, assessment tools, and faculty development resources around the world. The voice of MedEdPORTAL resides with its member institutions, affiliations, and partner organizations. MedEdPORTAL seeks to make this voice heard by training individuals, or Advocates, as a channel for the promotion of this unique service program. Advocates will play an important role in distributing training information, acting as on-site liaisons, and recruiting submissions and peer reviewers to MedEdPORTAL.

This session will:

  • Teach MedEdPORTAL Advocates how to promote MedEdPORTAL among faculty, colleagues, and friends across the globe.
  • Increase understanding among MedEdPORTAL Advocates about the process and the value of packaging content for publication through an open-source with a focus on increasing submissions to MedEdPORTAL.
  • Describe to Advocates how to build and foster relationships to garner high quality educational resources for submission and nominations of potential peer reviewers.
  • Promote the understanding and value of MedEdPORTAL as a form of scholarship that is comparable to a peer-reviewed research paper published through a reputable print-based journal.

MedEdPORTAL: Intellectual Property on an Open Source - What You Should Know

The creative digital works of medical and dental educators represent the core of MedEdPORTAL. This dynamic and asynchronous digital learning environment has taken these works outside of the classroom and the traditional copyright frameworks for educational use of materials. Because the materials submitted to MedEdPORTAL are made widely available, educators submitting to MedEdPORTAL must be conscious of any copyright issues in their works and acquire the appropriate permissions. MedEdPORTAL's strict rights clearance process ensures that MedEdPORTAL resources are available to the globe, both free of charge and in perpetuity. This model is meant to address areas of potential infringement and serve to assist the education audience in publishing their digital educational scholarship on an open basis. This workshop will feature a presentation on intellectual property for medical and dental educators with regard to MedEdPORTAL and will feature a panel discussion of experts for further instruction and discussion.

This session will:

  • Define the varying aspects of copyright, intellectual property, and patient privacy information and infringements.
  • Provide an understanding of copyright law basics as they relate to open-source publishing and provide clarification of "public domain," vs. "openly licensed content" vs. "publically available" via the Internet or other means.
  • Highlight the importance of informed consent and compliance with patient privacy laws.
  • Provide a working knowledge of developing content focused with repurposing and licensing.
  • Suggest ways to obtain individual institutional copyright policy information.
  • Review the options available for licensing solutions available today.

Publishing Teaching Resources Online - The MedEdPORTAL Experience

New forms of digital publishing have provided unprecedented opportunities for publication of scholarly works online. The transformational power of injecting e-learning technology into medical education now saturates many of today's institutions and learning establishments. E-learning technology is an emerging method of learning where the medium of instruction is based heavily upon computer, digital, and multimedia technologies. Through MedEdPORTAL, these facets of delivery blend together; providing learners free access to high-quality, peer-reviewed educational modules. As budding technologies supply more efficient means of reaching learners, MedEdPORTAL strives to maintain the balance between technological advancement and scholarly refinement. This workshop serves as an introduction to the MedEdPORTAL publication service and online journal. Authors are encouraged to bring their teaching materials as the session will cover educational scholarship through peer review. In addition, they will learn the processes of submitting those materials through MedEdPORTAL for publication with global dissemination. The workshop will conclude with a synopsis on utilizing the program for promotion and tenure purposes

This session will:

  • Provide a working knowledge on how to develop and properly package the essential components of a complete MedEdPORTAL teaching module.
  • Review the key elements of the commonly accepted principles of educational scholarship and identify how incorporating this criterion strengthens the scholarly value of a MedEdPORTAL submission.
  • Present an understanding of the MedEdPORTAL publication workflow and teach how to monitor a submission's progress through the publication process.
  • Increase familiarity with the MedEdPORTAL submission web page interface by focusing on the author's role in ensuring prospective publications are properly submitted.
  • Highlight the significance and ease of generating usage data as a means of demonstrating the scholarly impact of a MedEdPORTAL publication.
  • Identify and address common concerns or setbacks that may delay the publication process.
