OSR/GSA Plenary: The Millennial Becomes a Physician

Medical students are changing. The old method of delivering supportive services no longer works as well as it once did, and schools are struggling to meet new demands with limited resources. This session will provide insight on several emerging areas of concern; managing debt and its effect on career planning, lifestyle and wellness. Viewed in the context of a medical student's life, these issues are best viewed holistically, as they overlap and intertwine. Do students want the information and supportive services we provide, or do we need to have a new conversation? Objectives: The session will provide an overview of the millennial student, profile examples of cutting-edge, student-focused support programs, and offer a framework for a dialogue between students and Student Affairs' staff about creating meaningful programs that take the best from both technology and human interaction.

OSR Breakout Session 2A - Conflicts of Interest & Pharmaceutical Companies

Moderators: Bryan Harris, Jennifer Olges

Speakers:
Susan Ehringhaus, Senior Director and Regulatory Counsel
Biomedical and Health Sciences Research
Association of American Medical Colleges

Philip A. Pizzo, MD, Dean of the School of Medicine, Carl and Elizabeth Naumann Professor
Professor of Pediatrics and of Microbiology & Immunology
Stanford University School of Medicine

The close ties between the medical profession and industry, particularly pharmaceutical companies, have been questioned and debated for many years. Certainly potential conflicts of interest abound. Several years ago the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) released self-imposed guidelines which were widely debated. This summer US Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) began releasing details to the press regarding the Congressional investigation of the medical profession's ties to industry, causing many physicians to fear that the public trust in our profession will fade.

Stanford University was one of the first academic medical centers to institute a strong policy regulating industry relations, and we are fortunate to have Stanford's Dean, Dr. Philip Pizzo, speaking at this session to discuss Stanford's guidelines and how their implementation affected his institution. The AAMC established a Conflicts of Interest Task Force many months ago with the charge to establish guidelines for academic medical centers, and we are lucky to have Ms. Ehringhaus at this session to discuss the AAMC's recently released guidelines.

OSR Breakout Session 2B - Could Facebook Get You Fired? Professionalism: Student and Faculty Accountability

Moderators: Sarah Milliken, MD, Catherine Spina

University of Colorado School of Medicine

Janet Trial, EdD, MSN, Director, Professionalism and the Practice of Medicine
Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California

As medical students, we are constantly being evaluated. Rigorous examinations extend from the classroom to the clinic. As members of the medical community, we have a responsibility to our patients and colleagues to master the basic and medical sciences. In addition, we have an equally important responsibility to foster a professional environment by adhering to Honor Codes and acting professionally. In this session, we will explore Honor Codes and professionalism teaching methods at medical schools and their effectiveness (perceived or actual). Additionally, we hope to engage in a conversation about how professionalism is, and should, be defined. How are current students being evaluated and what happens when professionalism infractions occur? What about the expectations of the faculty and staff at our medical schools? Are they being held accountable for professional behavior and if so, how? Are students actually being held to a higher level of professionalism than their educators?

This year, selected OSR reps will be participating in this event by meeting with prospective students during an informal session where the attendees can ask current medical students/OSR reps questions and learn more about the medical school application process, life as a medical student, and put a human face on the idea of medical school. Please contact Dominique Arce at dominiquearce@gmail.com if you are interested in participating.

OSR Breakout Session 3B - Public Health: What MDs Need to Know

Moderators: Diane Reis, Janae Phelps

Speakers:
Jan K. Carney, MD, MPH, Research Professor of Medicine
Associate Dean for Public Health, Department of Medicine
University of Vermont College of Medicine

Susan E. Skochelak, MD, MPH
Senior Associate Dean, Academic Affairs
University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health

There is increasing recognition that physicians must have a grounding in public health that allows them to promote a healthier population and intervene to improve health determinants instead of focusing solely on acute and chronic illness. While many medical students and practicing physicians have chosen to pursue public health training, medical curricula are also beginning to teach principles of public health. This session will explore the knowledge and skills that all MD graduates should have in preparation to practice medicine in a way that promotes a healthier public. The intersection of clinical medicine and public health and how the overlap will impact both fields in the future will also be discussed.

Dr. Carney is a former State Commissioner of Health for Vermont and currently on faculty at the University of Vermont as a research professor in public health and the course director for a required second year course in which students experience a semester of public health research. She will discuss the intersection of medicine and public health in education and practice.

The session will include time for questions and discussion.

Moderators: Roxanne Richards, Jason Lott

Speaker:
Andrew M. Thomas, MD, Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education

Financing and delivery of health care in the United States is myriad and complex. Understanding the current relationship between payers, providers, insurers, and hospitals is necessary, however, for understanding the future of medicine. This panel will introduce medical students to issues, controversies, and future directions of the U.S. health care system, focusing on topics especially relevant to physicians-in-training.

GSA Transition of Medical School to Residency Forum

Is the MSPE Dead?

Moderator: Molly Osborne, MD, PhD

Speakers:
Richard Wheeler, MD
Lanny Close, MD
Maria Savoia, MD
Neil Parker, MD
Angela Nuzzarello, MD

This Transition Forum will review the history of the MSPE while addressing the major concern that many residency directors don't fully use the MSPE in their selection procedures. The medical student performance evaluation (MSPE), which includes a narrative evaluation of medical students, is an integral part of the academic record. However, the MSPE is a balancing act. The timing is driven by the academic requirements to include activities through the third year of medical school, yet a major purpose is to have a narrative evaluation available to residency directors for their selection of applicants. We'll address the academic issues, the timing, the format of the MSPE, and potential solutions.

OSR Plenary- Career Advising for the Match: What Residency Program Directors are Looking for and How to Show Them You've Got It!

Moderators: Ricci Sylla, Sarah Milliken, MD, Dominique Arce

Speakers:
Maureen Garrity, PhD, Associate Dean of Medical Student Affairs
University of Colorado School of Medicine

Paul J. Jones, MD
Associate Provost, Student Affairs
Rush Medical College of Rush University Medical Center

Randall Schlievert, MD, Director, Pediatric Residency & Child Abuse Programs
Associate Professor, Pediatrics
The University of Toledo College of Medicine

Christopher Stillwell, MA, Director, Academic & Career Advisor
University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health

As medical education continues to change, good and accurate career counseling is critical in preparing students for the transition to the residency of their choice. Medical school classes are increasing in size while graduate medical education positions stay stagnant. It is possible this may make the Match process increasingly competitive in the future. Thus, career counseling will become even more important. In this session, we will explore current career counseling methods, the effect of the publication of "Charting Outcomes of the Match," and what residency directors are looking for when selecting candidates for their programs.
