AspiringDocs.org/GSA-MAS/OCOMM Session
Developing Data-Driven Strategies to Achieve Racial
and Ethnic Medical Student Diversity
How are medical schools striving to achieve racial and
ethnic diversity today? How can data best be used to inform and
further these efforts? This session will explore how AAMC researchers
developed the Applicant Yield Database, a creative and elegant analysis
of several different databases that identifies the actual and potential
minority student medical school applicant yields of all U.S. undergraduate
colleges and universities. These data became the foundation for
AspiringDocs.org, the association's national campaign to increase
minority interest and enrollment in medicine. Similarly, AAMC members
are using data to improve and advanced their minority recruitment
programs. Hear from AAMC AYD authors and association members about
how you can use data to strategically enhance your institution's
diversity efforts.

AAMC Focus Session
Diversity Across the Physician Education Continum
The subject of diversity and the ways in which it is defined and
included in medical education continues to present opportunities
for rich discussion. Topics in the curriculum around diversity range
from cultural competency to genetic medicine. Diversity involves
sociological variables such as age, ethnicity, and gender. Do medical
school faculty have the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes
to navigate sensitive topics such as stereotypes, prejudices, and
health care disparities in the medical school curriculum? What role
models do students and residents have to guide them in learning
about diversity? How are the elements of diversity manifest in the
students, residents, and faculty? What types of needs assessments
or evaluations are conducted? How are results used? How is the hidden
curriculum addressed? How can holistic review contribute to a more
diverse medical school population?
These and other questions will be addressed during this session.
The session will be highly interactive and organized around case
studies to be presented by panelists and discussed by the audience,
with time for comments, observations, and questions among panelists
and audience members.

GSA-MAS Town Hall Meeting on the Establishment of
a new AAMC Affinity Group on Diversity and Inclusion
Town Hall Meeting on the establishment of a new AAMC
Affinity Group on Diversity and Inclusion A new AAMC affinity group
will address issues related to diversity policies, programs, and
practices that shape the medical education environment for medical
students, faculty, staff, and other members of the academic medical
community. Approved in principle in February 2008, the Group on
Diversity and Inclusion (GDI) will serve as the national forum to
help academic institutions understand the benefits of diversity
in medicine and the biomedical sciences, with two ultimate goals
of providing quality care to the underserved and eliminating health
disparities. The GDI will focus on advancing diversity in four key
areas of medicine: health care, research, education and leadership.
