National Survey of Clerkship Director Demographics, Resources, and Professional Life

After publishing Expectations of and for Clerkship Directors: A Collaborative Statement from the Alliance for Clinical Education (Teaching & Learning in Medicine, 2003, 15:217), it was felt that a follow up survey of these expectations was merited. With more additions to medical school curricula coupled with increasing patient care demands, efforts of clerkship directors may be stymied by forces beyond their control. As a result, a national survey was conducted of clerkship directors in an attempt to validate the expectations for clerkship directors.

The purpose of this panel is to:

  • Address the demographic characteristics of the clerkship director
  • Summarize personnel and other resources that support the clerkships
  • Identify the impact of the clerkship director role on professional productivity and satisfaction
  • Correlate the findings from the survey with the expectations manuscript

AAMC Gold Humanism Honor Society Session Medicine's Social Contract: Individual and Institutional Challenges to Humanism

This panel will focus on the challenges faced by academic medicine in re-asserting itself as a social and public good, where organizational barriers present substantial obstacles to institutions and individuals. Is it feasible to think that individuals with a humanistic bent to medical practice can find antidotes to this demoralization and the wearing down that occurs as one seeks to repair this social contract?

Student Information System: Using Case Studies to Demonstrate a User-Friendly and Seamless Approach between Student Affairs & Medical Education

The University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine has developed its own web based online Student Information System, called MedOneStop.uc.edu to enhance information exchange among students and administrative personnel in Student Affairs, Medical Education and departments throughout the Medical Center. This session will focus on several case studies involving medical students, faculty and administrators to demonstrate how the SIS is utilized. Those in Student Affairs and Medical Education will benefit from seeing a SIS put into practice to benefit medical students and faculty alike. Having an online SIS has encouraged greater coordination and collaboration between Student Affairs, Medical Education and departments for the benefit of up-to-date services information to medical students, faculty and staff.
