GSA/OSR Plenary:
The Millennial Becomes a Physician
Medical students are changing. The old method of delivering
supportive services no longer works as well as it once did, and
schools are struggling to meet new demands with limited resources.
This session will provide insight on several emerging areas of concern;
managing debt and its effect on career planning, lifestyle and wellness.
Viewed in the context of a medical student's life, these issues
are best viewed holistically, as they overlap and intertwine. Do
students want the information and supportive services we provide,
or do we need to have a new conversation? Objectives: The session
will provide an overview of the millennial student, profile examples
of cutting-edge, student-focused support programs, and offer a framework
for a dialogue between students and Student Affairs' staff about
creating meaningful programs that take the best from both technology
and human interaction.

GSA
Plenary: Holistic Review: Remaking the Face of Medicine
Holistic Review of Medical School Applicants represents
an opportunity as well as the method to enhance the quality and
diversity of our medical school classes. This interactive session
will present background information and rationale for incorporating
Holistic Review, as well as the recommendations of an AAMC working
group addressing Holistic Review of Medical School Applicants. Participants
will work in small groups and examine cases that illustrate how
the incorporation of a holistic review will impact decisions made
concerning medical school admission of applicants. Groups will present
their findings and decisions and there will be an opportunity for
discussion and review of decision making processes.
Objectives:
-
To provide an overview and details of the process of Holistic
Review of Medical Applicants.
-
To demonstrate how Holistic Review can be implemented
into existing admissions procedures in medical schools.
-
To involve participants in utilization of the process
of Holistic Review by examining sample cases and scenarios reflecting
actual applicants to medical schools.
-
To provide a moderated discussion of the outcomes
of the review by small group participants.

Transition of Medical School to Residency Forum
Is the MSPE Dead?
This Transition Form will review the history of the
MSPE while addressing the major concern that many residency directors
don't fully use the MSPE in their selection procedures. The medical
student performance evaluation (MSPE), which includes a narrative
evaluation of medical students, is an integral part of the academic
record. However, the MSPE is a balancing act. The timing is driven
by the academic requirements to include activities through the third
year of medical school, yet a major purpose is to have a narrative
evaluation available to residency directors for their selection
of applicants. We'll address the academic issues, the timing, the
format of the MSPE, and potential solutions.

GSA Plenary:
Better Applicants and Physicians for Tomorrow: An Examination of
Medical School and Residency Applicant Pools
The AAMC has recommended that medical schools increase
enrollment by 30% over the next decade. As medical schools prepare
to meet this challenge, concerns arise regarding the quality and
diversity of the applicant pool and the number of available residency
training positions. This session brings together several AAMC reports
to illuminate key national findings that medical school officials
might consider in their planning. AAMC staff speakers will join
medical school colleagues to dialogue about the implications and
best practices for future expansion plans as a way of assuring better
doctors for tomorrow.
Objectives:
-
To provide an overview of recent AAMC studies on
the applicant pool and current student population.
-
To provide an opportunity to discuss the various
challenges that medical schools will face with expanding enrollment.
