Plenary Session: Creating a Better Tomorrow

Karen Davis, Ph.D. #

John A.D. Cooper Lecture
Achieving a High Performance Health System: Role of AcademicHealth Centers and Teaching Hospitals

Karen Davis, Ph.D.
President, The Commonwealth Fund

Karen Davis, Ph.D., began the plenary session by describing the current muddled state of our nation's health system, which she said had seen "little improvement in recent years." Among non-elderly Americans, 42 percent do not have health insurance. Poor and some middle-class Americans alike are struggling to have their health needs met. Quality indicators, she said, show that our hospitals can improve the care that they provide. However, she noted that some medical centers, such as the Mayo Health System, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, and Johns Hopkins Health System, are taking innovative steps at transforming their care delivery.

Jordan J. Cohen Lecture
Interprofessional Education: Finding Our Way Forward 35 Years After the First Institute of Medicine Report

Madeline H. Schmitt, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus, University of Rochester School of Nursing

Moving forward, the academic medical community should embrace more forms of interprofessional education, said Madeline H. Schmitt, Ph.D. She pointed to evidence that when residents trained under nurses in certain situations, the young doctors garnered more respect for their nursing colleagues. Schmitt said, however, that interprofessional education is "not just about doctors and nurses" but includes other providers like social workers. Effective interprofessional collaboration, Schmitt said, will be more important than ever in the future because more patients will have chronic diseases that require different kinds of providers to handle various elements of care.

Robert G. Petersdorf Lecture
Science and Society

Alan I. Leshner, Ph.D.
CEO, American Association for the Advancement of Science

Alan I. Leshner, Ph.D., concluded the plenary session by emphasizing that for the scientific field to advance, it must have support from society at large. As such, it is critically important that researchers communicate the benefits of scientific progress and "listen to what [they] can do about society's concerns about science," he said. Leshner introduced the term "glolal," or bringing a global issue to a local level so that lay people can better understand how this scientific topic can help them individually.
