GSA Plenary: A Balancing Act: Self Care, Health,
and Professional Behavior
The purpose of this session is to discuss the aspects
of health, wellness and professional behavior in the context of
medical education and student affairs. Medical school and residency
training represent periods of intense study and training and can
be very stressful life periods. There is a large literature on impaired
physicians, addiction and substance abuse as unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Identifying stressful situations early in one's career, as a medical
student or before and providing models for healthy coping has the
potential to reduce the likelihood that a physician will make poor
choices later in life.
This session will have 4 speakers who will address various
aspects of self-care, health and professional behaviors. One speaker
is a psychiatrist with a large experience of working with impaired
physicians and with physicians who have had complaints of disruptive
behaviors in the work place. A second speaker, also a psychiatrist,
is a Dean of Students with a strong interest in taking a proactive
approach to health in the medical student population. The third
speaker, a medical student, who will talk about balance issues during
medical school. The fourth speaker comes with a long history of
work in student affairs and medical education and will give his
personal reactions and responses to the issues raised. The session
will allow significant time for audience questions and discussion.

GSA Plenary: Justice in the Balance: Weighing
Risks and Rights in the Criminal Background Check (Joint Plenary)
Criminal Background Checks are now a reality for entering
medical school classes of many constituent schools. The decision's
been made, the process is in place, and the pilot year is underway.
What is the status of the AAMC's pilot implementation? Are there
any preliminary data from the pilot? What considerations should
be factored in for Admissions Committees and CBC review committees
at the institutional level to make sure accepted and potentially
accepted applicants are not negatively affected when there are "hits"
on the record? How do you interpret "hits" and can the impact be
standardized across institutions? How do you account for variability
in state laws? Are there any populations "at risk" for being impacted
negatively more disproportionately than others? Is a CBC report
a part of the educational record and how should it be maintained?
What other questions should you be asking? Join us in this interactive
session as we explore the potential benefits, pitfalls and consequences
(intended and unintended) of the implementation of the CBC program
by examining simulated cases to see "What would you do?"
Objectives:
1) To update the constituency on the status of the
pilot year and the implementation process.
2) Raise the awareness of the constituency on what they need to
focus on at their home institution, given the variability of state
laws, institutional policies, etc. - which is the creation of their
own CBC review committee, committee membership, and governing policies.
3) Involve the attendees in an interactive exercise where they actually
review (in groups) one of two scenarios that will be presented for
discussion. One group from each scenario will be asked to present
a summary of their group's discussion and decision.
4) Educate the attendees on terminology germane to the CBC (this
will include distribution of a handout) Rather than "talking at"
the attendees through yet another panel, we are looking to get them
involved so they can see first hand the potential concerns and questions
that they need to take home with them.

GSA Plenary: The Ethics of Financial Advising
Last March, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo launched
an investigation into school/lender relationships. The result of
his investigation, and the following activities by other state Attorney
generals and the Department of Education, has changed the financial
aid landscape. This session will explore the new relationships between
schools and the lending partners who make federal and private loans
available to medical students, and explore ways to provide the customer
service our students (and institutions) expect without crossing
any ethical boundaries.

Beyond the GQ: Evaluating Your Careers in Medicine
Program
Measuring the success of your Careers in Medicine program
is a necessary part of program implementation. Program evaluation
can address many issues, including identifying areas in need of
improvement, confirming that the program improves student specialty
choice, or justifying the existence of the program to institutional
leadership. For each of these areas, there are multiple methods
of evaluation, but all are based the successful implementation of
an effective program.
Research has identified several critical ingredients
of effective career counseling interventions. CiM provides a core
framework to support these components, which can be implemented
in many ways. In this session, we will explore those critical ingredients
and how they are, or can be, incorporated into CiM. We will then
describe ways of measuring their success.

GSA Plenary: Expanding Medical School Class
Size: Challenges and Opportunities
In 2006, the AAMC issued a position statement on the
physician workforce which called for a 30% increase in the enrollment
of United States medical schools over the next decade. In response
to this statement, several medical schools have recently increased
their class size and many others are planning to increase enrollment.
The purpose of this session is to discuss some of the factors involved
in accommodating larger class sizes and to give session participants
practical guidelines on how to best implement enrollment expansion.
The session will consist of a moderated panel discussion.
Medical School Expansion from the viewpoint of:
1. AAMC, a survey
(PDF, 10 pages)
2. Student Affairs
3. Diversity (PDF,

4. Financial aspects from the Dean
5. Academic Affairs
6. LCME (PDF, 3 pages)
The discussion will also include a summary of best practices
based on a recent AAMC study of schools in the process of developing
plans for enrollment expansion.
