MedEdPORTAL Workshop Overviews

MedEdPORTAL is a new approach to online publication that offers peer review for teaching resources. Examples of MedEdPORTAL publications include tutorials, virtual patients, cases, lab manuals, assessment instruments, faculty development materials, etc. MedEdPORTAL is available free to the general public and covers the continuum of medical education (i.e. undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education). MedEdPORTAL contains descriptive information about published resources and indicates how these materials may be accessed or obtained.

MedEdPORTAL is a resource designed to help faculty publish and share educational resources. A long standing priority of the AAMC Group on Educational Affairs, MedEdPORTAL is the only resource that focuses exclusively on the continuum of medical education and addresses the unique needs of medical educators. MedEdPORTAL was designed to promote collaboration and educational scholarship by facilitating the open exchange of peer-reviewed teaching resources.

Description of Topic and Rationale: New forms of digital publishing have provided unprecedented opportunities for publication of scholarly works online. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has developed MedEdPORTAL (www.aamc.org/mededportal) to serve as a prestigious publishing venue through which medical educators and learners might disseminate their educational works for free. MedEdPORTAL was designed to promote collaboration and educational scholarship by facilitating the exchange of high quality peer reviewed educational materials, knowledge, and solutions. Through MedEdPORTAL, medical educators, learners, and medical schools may both publish and share instructional and assessment materials for free. Examples of MedEdPORTAL publications include tutorials, virtual patients, cases, lab manuals, assessment instruments, faculty development materials, etc.

Publishing within MedEdPORTAL has several benefits for medical educators including recognition of peer-reviewed work that may be considered by promotion & tenure committees, useful feedback for enhancement or expansion of the resource, and expanding the audience of potential users.

This small group discussion will provide an overview of the MedEdPORTAL system, including examples of various types of materials, an explanation of the submission and peer review process, and provide testimonials from faculty who have published in MedEdPORTAL. Participants will learn how published educational teaching resources can be considered for educational scholarship. In addition, participants will learn how MedEdPORTAL tracks usage and dissemination of each published submission in an effort to measure impact.

Purpose and Rationale: MedEdPORTAL (www.aamc.org/mededportal) is a free resource designed to help medical educators and learners publish and share educational resources. A long standing priority of the AAMC Group on Educational Affairs, MedEdPORTAL is the only resource that focuses exclusively on the continuum of medical education (i.e. undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education) and addresses the unique needs of medical educators and learners. MedEdPORTAL was designed to promote collaboration and educational scholarship by facilitating the open exchange of high quality peer-reviewed teaching resources. Examples of MedEdPORTAL publications include tutorials, virtual patients, cases, lab manuals, assessment instruments, faculty development materials, etc.

This workshop will begin with an overview of the MedEdPORTAL system, including examples of various types of materials and the submission and peer review process. In addition, participants will learn how MedEdPORTAL tracks usage and dissemination of each published submission in an effort to measure impact and assist educators with promotion and tenure. Each participant will consider their own educational resources and identify potential items which may be suitable for submission to MedEdPORTAL. Selected items will then be discussed to i) examine the degree to which the items meet accepted standards of educational scholarship, and ii) draft a MedEdPORTAL submission form.

Specific Objectives: By the end of the mini-workshop, participants will be able to:

    1. Describe the purpose of MedEdPORTAL and the value it brings to the medical education community.
    2. Describe the MedEdPORTAL peer review process.
    3. Identify an item (e.g., instructional material, faculty development resource, learner assessment tool, evaluation instrument, virtual patient case) that would be appropriate for submission to MedEdPORTAL.
    4. Evaluate the degree to which the items meet accepted standards of educational scholarship and identify additions/revisions that might enhance its scholarly value.
    5. Complete an initial draft of the MedEdPORTAL submission form.
    6. Inform colleagues about the purpose of MedEdPORTAL, the review criteria and process, and assist them with the submission of their own materials.

Intended Audience: All medical school faculty, students, educators, and administrators. .
