Beyond the GQ: Evaluating Your Careers in Medicine Program

Measuring the success of your Careers in Medicine program is a necessary part of program implementation. Program evaluation can address many issues, including identifying areas in need of improvement, confirming that the program improves student specialty choice, or justifying the existence of the program to institutional leadership. For each of these areas, there are multiple methods of evaluation, but all are based the successful implementation of an effective program.

Research has identified several critical ingredients of effective career counseling interventions. CiM provides a core framework to support these components, which can be implemented in many ways. In this session, we will explore those critical ingredients and how they are or can be incorporated into CiM. We will then describe ways of measuring their success.

Careers in Medicine: Advising Students on Their Specialty Choice

We know from the AAMC's Graduation Questionnaire that a top factor influencing students' specialty choice is advising. And while advisors play an important role in providing career guidance to students, it is also one of the lowest rated services offered by schools. This session will provide clinical faculty with a foundation for working with students on career and specialty decisions. We will present the philosophy of Careers in Medicine, a four-year career planning program for medical students with advising as a key component, and introduce valuable resources and skills to assist clinical faculty in providing sound career advice to students.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  1. Become familiar with the Careers in Medicine program and structure.
  2. Obtain basic skills in advising and working with students in their specialty decisions.
  3. Learn the resources that will assist them in their advising role.
