Institute for Improving Clinical Care: Transforming Chronic Care in Academic Settings

Redefining health care for the 100 million Americans with serious chronic illness requires transformation of the healthcare system from one that is essentially reactive — responding mainly when a patient is sick — to one that is proactive and focused on keeping a person as healthy and functional as possible. This session will present case studies — anchored in the application of evidence-based strategies for chronic illness care and residency education — from the remarkable innovation that has taken place in the Academic Chronic Care Collaborative, an ongoing network of 48 teams from 22 medical schools and teaching hospitals.

Moderator:
David P. Stevens, MD
Vice President, Healthcare Improvement

Industry Support of Medical Education
The AAMC is committed to better understanding and minimizing the potentially undesirable impact of gifts and other blandishments from drug and medical device makers on the educational missions of academic medical centers. This session will explore the extent of subvention, evidence that assesses its impact on medical education, and available options for mitigating those impacts.

Implementing a Vision for Medical Education: Opportunities and Action
In July 2004, the AAMC's Institute for Improving Medical Education issued the report, "Educating Doctors to Provide High Quality Medical Care: A Vision for Medical Education in the United States." The AAMC's Group on Educational Affairs was invited to respond to the report, in particular with ideas for implementation of the report's recommendations. During the past year, the GEA has developed implementation strategies and a research agenda in response to the five areas of the report. This session will provide a forum for discussion of the GEA's response to the IIME report.

The Women's Health Initiative: Answers and Questions

The WHI was launched in 1991 to perform large, long-term clinical trials to assess the effects of a low-fat diet on breast and colorectal cancer, menopausal hormone therapy on heart disease, and calcium and vitamin D supplementation on hip and other osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women aged 50-79. An observational study was added to complement the trials, resulting in the collection of health outcomes, with and without specific interventions, on over 160,000 women for an average of 8 years, at a total cost of $725M. Recent reports from the study have challenged important, long-held understandings pertaining to women's health and have generated controversy over the study's design and methodology. This session will review the major findings of the WHI, some of the controversies they generated, and the challenge to journalists who follow the WHI and attempt to explain its findings and controversies to the public.

From the Battlefield to the Clinic: Treating America's Newest Veterans

This is the 60th anniversary year of Policy Memorandum #2, the VA document which established the partnerships between VA Medical Centers and America's medical schools. This partnership ushered in a new higher quality system of care for the veterans of WWII. It is appropriate today to consider the medical needs of our newest veterans, arising out of their experiences in the Middle East. This session will provide insight into care of the war wounded. It will cover battlefield interventions, the latest physical rehabilitation techniques and prostheses, and the emerging neurobiology of PTSD.
