Abstract: In July 2004, the Institute for Improving
Medical Education (IIME) issued the report: "Educating Doctors to
Provide High Quality Medical Care: A Vision of Medical Education
in the United States." The Institute's director, Mike Whitcomb,
invited the Group on Educational Affairs to respond to the report.
At the 2005 AAMC meetings, a plenary addressed "What was working
in Med Ed, across the continuum and what was not." Each GEA section
subsequently held focus sessions asking the same questions relating
to their segment of medical education. The GEA then created a white
paper response, which has been discussed at sessions at the 2006
AAMC meeting. This UGME business meeting is the opportunity to review
the process to date, including the various reports. We will then
hear from two national/international groups, their reactions to
the reports (both basic scientists and clinical educators across
disciplines). As a group, the three entities will discuss collaborative
opportunities across this spectrum of educators, opportunities to
joint venture on "next steps" in moving the agenda for change in
undergraduate medical education.
