Pursuing Professionalism: Best Practices in Creating Value through
Leadership, Medical Education and Institutional Culture
Sponsored by Academic Medicine and AAMC's Division
of Medical Education
Professionalism is intrinsic to being a physician, pursuing
excellence and creating value. Building on the AAMC's portfolio
of resources on professionalism including the Medical School Objectives
Project, journal articles from Academic Medicine, and the
work of former Petersdorf Scholars, Drs. Herbert Swick and . Thomas
Inui, a year-long initiative was begun in 2006 to learn how institutions
are addressing 'professionalism' and to gather together and disseminate
their innovative approaches and best practices. The initiative also
explored the meaning of professionalism and examined the role of
institutional leadership among 12 medical schools and academic medical
centers transforming their respective environments to educate accordingly.
This session features leaders from several of these institutions
as they discuss challenges faced and successes achieved in fostering
a culture to empower and sustain professionalism in the 21st century.
Speakers: Introduction — Michael
Whitcomb, Editor-in-Chief, Academic Medicine, Moderator —
Linda Blank, Petersdorf Scholar
Invited panelists: Roger Hadley, MD,
