In the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, the nation's
medical schools and teaching hospitals have mobilized quickly to
come to the aid of the victims. The number of institutions that
have responded by sending desperately needed medical personnel and
supplies, receiving patients from the quake zone, or coordinating
fundraising drives for disaster relief continues to grow.
The member activity link on this site lists current relief initiatives
by AAMC-members in Haiti and at their institutions.
Resources for health care responders and a list of charitable organizations
accepting donations is included below.
The AAMC has also been working with the Assistant Secretary for
Preparedness and Response at the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services (HHS) to identify specialty physicians who are willing
to volunteer in Haiti. Those specialty positions include trauma
surgeons, orthopedists, and anesthesiologists, or others with experience
and capability treating crush injuries.
While many organizations are trying to coordinate relief efforts
with physicians and medical facilities, the HHS recommends individuals
and organizations contact www.cidi.org/incident/haiti-10a
for information.
As additional information becomes available, the AAMC will post
it here. Thank you, in advance, for your help.
Resources for Health Care Providers and Responders
To prepare for deployment, potential volunteers should review important
information developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). Guidance
for Relief Workers and Others Traveling to Haiti for Earthquake
Response includes recommendations for:
- Vaccinations
- Avoiding insect-borne/other infectious diseases
- Preventing injuries
- Managing stress/emotional response
- Potential health issues upon returning to the U.S.
Clinicians who are treating survivors for the Haiti earthquake
and/or emergency responders who are returning from Haiti will want
to be familiar with:
- Cultural and situational issues that may influence how Haitian
earthquake survivors communicate with clinicians
- Disease risks after major earthquakes
- Differential diagnosis and approach to common complaints (e.g.,
fever, rash, respiratory symptoms) in patients who were in Haiti
during and after the earthquake
- Resources to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients
who were in Haiti during and after the earthquake
- Notifying public health officials of infectious diseases with
potential public health importance, or clusters of infectious
disease, in persons who have recently arrived from Haiti.
