Tables and Graphs Summarizing U.S. Medical School Revenues for Fiscal Year 2007

The following tables and graphs summarize data from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Part I-A Annual Medical School Financial Questionnaire (AFQ) administered by the AAMC. Fiscal year 2007 is the most recent data covering 126 accredited U.S. medical schools. FY2007 Medical School Financing Highlights

All data below are for the 126 medical schools that were LCME-accredited in fiscal year 2007: 76 public schools and 50 private schools.
Total revenues supporting the 126 medical schools were $74.9 billion in fiscal year 2007 which represents an increase of 6.2% from fiscal year 2006.
Of the $74.9 billion in total medical school revenue, $45.6 billion (61%) was "recorded" on the books of the medical schools, while $29.4 billion (39%) was "not-recorded" (received or borne by an entity other than the medical school such as an affiliated hospital and/or practice plan).
From FY2006 to FY2007, medical schools collectively reported significant growth in these revenue areas: hospital purchased services and investments (9.9%) and endowment (12.9%).
For the 76 public schools, the mean total revenue was $469 million and the median was $392 million. For the 50 private schools, these figures were $787 million and $614 million, respectively.
Total faculty practice plan revenues were $28.5 billion, or 38.1% of all revenues.
The mean faculty practice plan revenue for the 76 public schools was $157 million while the mean for the 50 private schools was more than double at $332 million.
Over half (52.2%) of all medical school revenue is a combination of practice plan revenue ($28.5 billion) and hospital purchased services and investments ($10.6 billion).
In constant FY2005 dollars, total grants and contracts revenue remained level from FY2005 to FY2006 (0.05% increase from $20.98 billion to $20.99 billion) and declined 1.0% from FY2006 to FY2007 ($20.78 billion).
In constant FY2005 dollars, federal research grants and contracts direct revenue increased 0.73% from FY2005 ($10.51 billion) to FY2006 ($10.58 billion) and decreased 3.1% from FY2006 to FY2007 ($10.25 billion). Federal research grants and contracts facilities and administrative costs followed a similar pattern, increasing slightly (0.75%) from FY2005 ($3.99 billion) to FY2006 ($4.02 billion) and decreasing 2.8% from FY2006 to FY2007 ($3.91 billion).
