  • Total revenues supporting the 125 medical schools were $70.6 billion in fiscal year 2006 which represents an increase of 6.3% from fiscal year 2005.
  • Of the $70.6 million in total medical school revenue, $42.8 billion (61%) was "recorded" on the books of the medical schools, while $27.8 billion (39%) was "not-recorded," that is received or borne by an entity other than the medical school such as an affiliated hospital and/or practice plan.
  • From FY2005 to FY2006, medical schools collectively reported double-digit growth in these revenue areas of significance: hospital purchased services and investments (18.6%) and tuition and fees (12.3%).
  • For the 75 public schools, the mean for total revenue was $444 million with the median $378 million. For the 50 private schools, the mean for total revenue was $747 million with the median $572 million.
  • Total faculty practice plan revenues were $26.4 billion, or 37.3% of all revenues.
  • The mean for faculty practice plan revenue for the 75 public schools was $146 million while the mean for the 50 private schools was more than double at $308 million.
  • Over half - 50.9% - of all medical school revenue is a combination of practice plan revenue ($26.4 billion) and hospital purchased services and investments ($9.6 billion).
  • In constant FY2004 dollars, total grants and contracts revenue increased 1.8% from FY2004 ($19.93 billion) to FY2005 ($20.29 billion in constant dollars) and declined 0.2% from FY2005 to FY2006 ($20.25 billion in constant dollars).
