The following tables and graphs summarize data from the LCME Part IA Annual Financial Questionnaire administered by the Division of Medical School Services and Studies (DMSSS) at AAMC. The latest data are for fiscal year 2003 on all accredited U.S. medical schools. Highlights of Medical School Financing in 2003

  • Total revenues supporting the 125 accredited allopathic medical schools amounted to $56.9 billion in fiscal year 2003. This reflects an increase of 8% from fiscal year 2002.
  • Between FY 2002 and FY 2003, medical schools reported double-digit growth in the following revenue sources: federal grants and contracts (13.9%), federal appropriations (20.1%), and parent university support (18.1%).
  • Aggregate state appropriations to medical schools decreased by 1.2%.
  • Public medical schools reported median total revenues of $314.8 million; private schools, $456.3 million.
  • Expenditures by medical school affiliates related to medical school programs amounted to $21 billion, comprising 36% of total expenditures.
  • Total faculty practice plan revenues amounted to $20 billion, accounting for 35.9% of the total revenues supporting medical school programs.
  • Private schools reported median faculty practice plan revenues of $147.5 million; the median for public schools was $102.5 million.
  • The combined revenues from practice plans ($20 billion) and hospital support ($6.9 billion) amounted to 48% of the total revenues supporting medical school programs.
  • Endowment income increased 6.8 % between FY 2002 and FY 2003. This compares with a 13.9% increase between FY 2001 and FY 2002.
  • Public schools' tuition and fee revenues increased 11.2 % between FY 2002 and FY 2003. This compares with an 11.5% increase from FY 2001 and FY 2002.
