The following tables and graphs summarize data from the LCME Part IA Annual Financial Questionnaire administered by the Division of Medical School Services and Studies (DMSSS) at AAMC. The latest data are for fiscal year 2002 on all accredited U.S. medical schools. Highlights of Medical School Financing in 2002

  • Total revenues supporting the 125 accredited allopathic medical schools amounted to $52.7 billion in 2002. This reflects an increase of 8.3% from fiscal year 2001.*
  • Between FY2001 and FY2002, double-digit growth occurred in the following sources: federal grants and contracts (15.7%), and endowment and gifts (10.3%).
  • Public medical schools reported median total revenues in support of medical school programs of $295.5 million; private schools, $424.2 million.*
  • Medical schools reported that about one third (37.4%) of the total funds that support their programs, $19.7 billion, are expenditures by medical school affiliates.
  • Total faculty practice plan revenues amounted to $19 billion, accounting for about one-third (36%) of the total revenues supporting medical school activities.
  • Private schools reported median faculty practice plan revenues of $144.6 million, much higher than the $94.6 million for public schools.
  • The combined revenues from practice plans ($19 billion) and hospital support ($6.6 billion) amounted to almost half (48.5%) of the total revenues supporting medical school programs. This percentage is slightly higher than the prior year (47.7%).
  • Endowment income increased 13.9% between FY 2001 and FY 2002. This compares with a 10.2% increase between FY2000 and FY2001.
  • Public schools' tuition and fee revenues increased 11.5% between FY 2001 and FY 2002. This compares with a 5% increase for the preceding period. Private schools' tuition and fee revenues increased 3.5% between FY 2001-02 and FY 2000-01.
