The following tables and graphs summarize the data from LCME Part IA Annual Financial Questionnaire administered by the Division of Medical School Services and Studies (DMSSS) at AAMC. The latest data are for fiscal year 2001 on all accredited US medical schools. Highlights of Medical School Financing in 2001

  • Total revenues for the 125 accredited allopathic medical schools’ amounted to $46.5 billion in 2001, an increase of 8.2% from fiscal year 2000.
  • Federal grants and contracts (direct) amounted to $7.68 billion in FY01, an increase of 14.4% from the prior year.
  • Faculty practice plan revenues amounted to $15.9 billion, an increase of 8% from the prior year. Faculty practice plan revenues account for about one-third (34.2%) of the total revenues supporting medical schools.
  • The combination of faculty practice plan revenues ($15.9 billion) and hospital support ($6.3 billion) amount to 47.7% of the total revenues supporting medical school programs. This percentage is slightly lower than the prior year (48.4%). The reduction is primarily related to the increase in Federal Grants and Contracts.
  • Endowment income increased by 10%, while revenue from gifts increased by 8.4% from the previous year.
  • Approximately one half of all medical schools reported reductions in hospital support in FY01 relative to FY00. Approximately one third of all schools reported reductions in faculty practice plan revenues.
