Tables and Graphs for Fiscal Year 2008

The following tables and graphs summarize data from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Part I-A Annual Medical School Financial Questionnaire (AFQ) administered by the AAMC. Fiscal year 2008 is the most recent data covering 126 accredited U.S. medical schools. Questions about the data or requests for additional comparative data can be directed to Jon Lang, Senior Database Specialist, Medical School and Faculty Studies at jlang@aamc.org or 202-862-6283.

FY2008 Medical School Financing Highlights

  • All data below are for the 126 medical schools that were LCME-accredited in fiscal year 2008: 76 public schools and 50 private schools.
  • Total revenues supporting the 126 medical schools were $78.9 billion in fiscal year 2008 which represents an increase of 5.0% from fiscal year 2007.
  • Of the $78.9 billion in total medical school revenue, $48.1 billion (61%) was "recorded" on the books of the medical schools, while $30.8 billion (39%) was "not-recorded" (received or borne by an entity other than the medical school such as an affiliated hospital or practice plan).
  • From FY2007 to FY2008, medical schools collectively reported meaningful growth in these revenue areas: state and local government and parent university support (14.1%), gifts (15.2%), and endowments (16.9%).
  • For the 76 public schools, the mean total revenue was $498 million and the median was $424 million. For the 50 private schools, these figures were $820 million and $651 million, respectively.
  • Total faculty practice plan revenues were $29.6 billion, or 37.6% of all revenues.
  • The mean faculty practice plan revenue for the 76 public schools was $166 million while the mean for the 50 private schools was more than double at $341 million.
  • Over half (52.3%) of all medical school revenue is a combination of practice plan revenue ($29.6 billion) and hospital purchased services and support ($11.6 billion).
  • In constant 2006 dollars, total grants and contracts revenue decreased 1.0% from FY2006 ($21.67 billion) to FY2007 ($21.46 billion) and declined 0.8% from FY2007 to FY2008 ($21.29 billion).
  • In constant 2006 dollars, federal research grants and contracts direct revenue decreased 3.0% from FY2006 ($10.92 billion) to FY2007 ($10.59 billion) and decreased 2.6% from FY2007 to FY2008 ($10.31 billion). Federal research grants and contracts facilities and administrative costs followed a similar pattern, decreasing 3.0% from FY2006 ($4.16 billion) to FY2007 ($4.03 billion) and decreasing 3.5% from FY2007 to FY2008 ($3.89 billion).
