Current
Revisions to the 1995 and 1997 E & M Documentation
Guidelines
An effort has been underway since June 2000 to revise the
E & M Documentation Guidelines. The Health Care Financing
Administration (HCFA) initiated this activity and contracted
with Aspen Systems to develop guidelines and clinical examples
to support the guidelines in order to provide direction for
clinical practitioners and to promote consistency among Carrier
Medical Directors in carrying out their responsibilities.
Initial results of the HCFA/Aspen activity were distributed
to the physician community and received widespread expressions
of concern and confusion about the new guidelines. Subsequently,
CMS agreed to cease work on the guideline development by CMS
staff and its contractor, Aspen, and to allow AMA to convene
a workgroup with representation from CMS and a broad cross-section
of the physician community. More >>
