Current AAMC Comments on CTSA Request For Applications
The AAMC has responded to the NIH's request for comments on the upcoming reissue
of the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) request for applications
(RFA). While supportive of the overall goals of the CTSA initiative, namely to
strengthen clinical and translational research by providing an "academic home"
for such research, AAMC made a number of suggestions to improve and strengthen

Cell Legislation
On August 9, 2001, President George W. Bush announced
a policy that federal funds could only be used to support research using human
embryonic stem cells lines that were derived before that date. The NIH Human Embryonic
Stem Cell Registry currently lists 21 human embryonic stem cell lines that meet
the eligibility criteria set by President Bush. Legislation to allow federal funding
for additional stem cell lines passed the House on May 24, 2005 and the Senate
on July 18, 2006. The President vetoed the bill on July 19, 2006 and the House
failed to override the veto on the same day. The AAMC strongly supported this
legislation and continues to advocate for an expanded federal stem cell policy.

Q's and A's
This set of questions and
answers summarizes the contents of the AAMC's February 10, 2005, teleconfernce
on current issues in effort reporting. During the teleconference, Joe Ellis, the
Director of NIH's Office of Policy on Extramural Grants Administration, and Susan
Ehringhaus, AAMC Associate General Counsel, provided answers to questions submitted
by representatives of AAMC member institutions. The text of the questions and
