Clinical Research Compliance & Human Subjects Protection

Current

Medical schools and teaching hospitals value integrity and accountability in the conduct of all research and vigilant protection of the rights and welfare of patients and other human subjects participating in research. Accepting external support for research, especially from federal sources, entails further obligation to meet all requirements to ensure the ethical conduct of research activity and the appropriate stewardship of funds and resources.

Recent federal actions have underscored the need to ensure greater consistency of high standards for the protection for human research participants, across the many settings in which such research is carried out. The AAMC supports the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP), incorporated in April 2001 and founded by bioethicists, patient advocates, medical investigators, and research institutions. AAHRPP is a nonprofit organization that offers accreditation to institutions engaged in research involving human participants using a voluntary, peer-driven, educational model.

Another major priority of the AAMC, following the address by AAMC president Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., to the AAMC 2000 Annual Meeting, is the effective management of financial conflicts of interest in clinical research.
