AAMC Presents Sen. Hutchison with
Public Service Award
June 18, 2004 - As part of the AAMC's Executive Council
meeting June 17, the AAMC recognized Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas)
for her dedicated public service on behalf of teaching hospitals
and medical schools. Specifically, Sen. Hutchison was honored for
her leadership on "The American Hospital Preservation Act"
and her efforts to secure additional Medicare Indirect Medical Education
(IME) payments in the "Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement
and Modernization Act of 2003."
The award was presented by Don Wilson, M.D., vice president for
medical affairs and dean, University of Maryland School of Medicine,
and current chairman of the AAMC Executive Council. In addition
to the AAMC's Executive Council, University of Texas Chancellor
Mark Yudof and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center President
M. Roy Wilson, M.D., were also present.
Upon accepting the award, Sen. Hutchison acknowledged that the
IME will be cut from 6.0 percent to 5.8 percent in October and reduced
further in following years. She also reiterated her commitment to
fight against such reductions, stating, "next year and every
year we will fight" this issue.
