June 4, 2004 - Stephanie Herseth (D-S.D.) won a June 1 special election for the at-large seat formerly held by Bill Janklow (R-S.D.), who resigned, effective Jan. 20. Ms. Herseth's election brings the party breakdown in the House of Representatives to 228 Republicans, 206 Democrats and 1 Independent.
