AAMC and FASEB Comment on OMB Peer Requirements

June 4, 2004 - The AAMC and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) commended the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for its revisions to the bulletin on peer review of influential scientific information [see Washington Highlights, April 23]. The bulletin applies to all "influential" scientific information that a federal agency disseminates. In particular, OMB's revised requirements now permit federal agencies to rely on the National Academies or other credible organizations to vet influential information. They further acknowledge that scientists receiving agency research grants remain sufficiently independent of that agency to serve on review panels, and they provide an exemption for timely release of certain types of important health or medical information. AAMC and FASEB noted that OMB had been attentive to the views of the scientific community in revising the requirements; however, both organizations remain wary of how successfully the requirements will be implemented.
