Dems Announce Platform Drafting Panel

May 28, 2004 - The Democratic National Committee May 21 announced the appointment of a 16-person Platform Drafting Committee, which will be chaired by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (Conn.). The Drafting Committee will hold a public hearing June 18 on healthcare issues in Santa Fe, N.M. The Platform Drafting Committee is responsible for preparing an initial draft of the party's platform, which is used as a working document by the Platform Committee at its meeting July 9 and 10. The other of the committee are:

  • Roberta Achtenberg, former Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development;
  • Lu Battaglieri, president, Michigan Education Association;
  • Rep. Shelley Berkley (Nev.);
  • Rep. Earl Blumenauer (Ore.);
  • Clayola Brown, International Vice President of UNITE;
  • Bill Garcia, businessman, New Mexico;
  • Judy Hale, president, West Virginia American Federation of Teachers;
  • Patty Judge, Iowa Agriculture Secretary;
  • Bill Lann Lee, former U.S. Assistant Attorney General;
  • John Marks, mayor, Tallahassee, Fla.;
  • Kevin O'Connor, International Association of Fire Fighters;
  • Chris Owens, public policy director, AFL-CIO;
  • Bill Perry, former Secretary of Defense;
  • Rep. Hilda Solis (Calif.); and
  • Paul T. Williams, Jr., attorney.
