HHS Releases FY 2004 Hospital Preparedness Funds

May 28, 2004 - The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) May 24 announced the release of $498 million to the states for hospital bioterrorism preparedness. The funds, intended to help strengthen the ability of hospitals and other health care facilities to respond to bioterror attacks and other disasters that cause mass casualties, are allocated to all states, territories and four metropolitan areas based on population. This is the third consecutive year that the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has provided funding to increase hospital preparedness, totaling more than $1.5 billion.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is expected to announce its FY 2004 grants soon, estimated to be at least $844 million. These, along with the hospital funds, are provided to state and metropolitan health departments for dissemination in accordance with an HHS-approved preparedness plan.
