House Rejects Proposal for
Commission to Study Politicization of Science
May 21, 2004 - The question of whether the Bush Administration
is politicizing science in the regulatory process emerged
again on Capitol Hill May 18 when the House rejected an amendment
by Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and John Tierney (D-Mass.)
to appoint a commission to study the issue. The amendment,
which was offered to the "Paperwork and Regulatory Improvements
Act of 2003" (H.R.
2432), would have created a 10-member commission to "examine
and evaluate executive branch regulatory activities and associated
decisions to determine the extent to which political considerations
have undermined the quality and use of science," and
report to Congress and the President "on measures that
can be taken to enhance the integrity of science in executive
branch regulatory activities and associated decisions."
The House defeated the amendment by a 226 to 201 vote with
one Republican supporting the amendment and five Democrats
voting no.
