Final VA CARES Report Released

May 14, 2004 - Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) Anthony Principi May 7 released the final version of the VA Capital Assets Realignment for Enhanced Service (CARES) report. The CARES process assessed VA's current health care infrastructure needs and developed recommendations for meeting those needs in the future. Among the report's recommendations are plans to close VA hospitals in Pittsburgh; Gulfport, Miss.; and Brecksville, Ohio; and build new hospitals in Orlando and Las Vegas. The recommendations also call for the construction of 156 community-based outpatient clinics, two rehabilitation centers for blind veterans, and four spinal cord centers.
