VA Research "Dear Colleague" Attracts 31 Signatures

April 30, 2004 - An April 22 "Dear Colleague" letter to appropriators on behalf of the Department of Veterans Affairs medical and prosthetic research program attracted the signatures of 31 Senators. Organized by Senators Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) and Bob Graham (D-Fla.) the letter was addressed to Senate VA-HUD Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Christopher Bond (R-Mo.) and Ranking Member Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) and urged appropriators to "demonstrate this nation's commitment to its veterans… by providing a needed increase" in the FY 2005 appropriation for the program. The letter called the Administration's proposed budget "insufficient to sustain current research initiatives or to provide the program growth necessary to attract and retain quality staff." Joining Sens. Bunning and Graham were Sens. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), John Edwards (D-N.C.), Russell Feingold (D-Wis.), Jim Jeffords (I-Vt.), Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), John Kerry (D-Mass.), Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), John Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.), Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), Jim Talent (R-Mo.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).
