Herman Testifies, Visits
Members of Congress on Health Professions Funding
April 30, 2004 - James M. Herman, M.D., M.S.P.H.,
chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at
the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and
Project Director of the Pennsylvania Area Health Education
Center (AHEC), testified
April 27 before the House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and
Human Services and Education Appropriations on behalf of the
Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC).
Dr. Herman highlighted the potentially devastating impact
of the Administration's proposed 64 percent cut to the Title
VII and VIII health professions programs on the health care
workforce. He testified that in its 10-year existence, the
Pennsylvania AHEC has trained 31,000 health profession students
in 93 different sites and has identified talented youth who
are interested in health careers and nurtured them through
the educational pipeline.
Dr. Herman also participated in a Health Professions Capitol
Hill Day April 28, where 20 health professionals and students
visited with over 30 Congressional offices regarding FY 2005
funding for the Title VII and VIII health professions and
nursing programs. During breakfast, Bill Hoagland, budget
director for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.),
provided an update of the budget process.
