Allied Health Professions Bill Introduced

April 16, 2004 - Representatives Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Ted Strickland (R-Ohio) March 23 introduced the "Allied Health Professions Reinvestment Act of 2004" (H.R. 4016). Similar to the Nurse Reinvestment Act of 2002, H.R. 4016 would address workforce problems such as declining student enrollments, existing shortages in practice settings, and faculty shortages in several allied health professions. Specifically, the legislation would establish a scholarship program to cover the tuition costs of an allied health education in return for service in an allied health shortage area; provide grants to schools of allied health or other health facilities for education, practice and retention activities; authorize grants for teaching comprehensive geriatric education; and establish an allied health professions faculty loan program. The legislation would come under Title VII of the Public Health Service Act, and be administered by the Bureau of Health Professions within the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
