FOVA Testifies Before Appropriations Subcommittee

March 26, 2004 - The Friends of VA Medical Care and Health Research (FOVA) testified March 25 before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs (VA), Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Independent Agencies. FOVA was represented by Galen Toews, M.D., professor of internal medicine and division chief of pulmonary and critical care at the University of Michigan Health System.

Dr. Toews presented to the subcommittee FOVA's funding recommendations for FY 2005. Specifically, FOVA is recommending an appropriation of $460 million for VA medical and prosthetics research, an increase of $54 million (13.4 percent) over current an increase of $3.26 billion (12.3 percent). Due to the crumbling infrastructure of many VA research facilities, FOVA is also recommending that Congress provide a steady stream of Minor Construction funding dedicated to upgrading and renovating existing research facilities. In FY 2005, FOVA recommends a funding level of $45 million for this proposal.
