McClellan Confirmed as CMS Administrator

{March 19, 2004 - The Senate March 12 confirmed the nomination of Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., to be administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Dr. McClellan previously served as director of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although an initial confirmation vote for Dr. McClellan was subjected to a "hold," the nomination was cleared for approval after Dr. McClellan agreed to discuss legislation that would allow importation of prescription drugs from abroad. Additionally, Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Tommy Thompson announced March 10 that he would not name Dr. McClellan as chairman of a task force investigating the feasibility of drug importation.
