AHRQ Testifies Before Appropriations Subcommittee

March 12, 2004 - At a March 10 hearing before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Director Carolyn Clancy, M.D., outlined the agency's proposed FY 2005 budget. The proposed AHRQ budget recommends total funding of $304 million (level funding with FY 2004), including $84 million for patient safety research and $162 million for research and dissemination activities related to improving health care quality.

In his questions, Subcommittee Chairman Ralph Regula (R-Ohio) focused on how the agency has educated the public and providers on ways to improve health care quality and efficiency. Dr. Clancy discussed partnerships with various provider groups, including collaborations with the AAMC to ensure that research findings on best practices are part of medical students' training. She emphasized AHRQ's efforts to translate its research into practice by distributing information on health care quality to all types of health care sites.
