House Committee Approves Stroke Prevention Bill

March 5, 2004 - The House Energy and Commerce Committee March 3 passed the Stroke Treatment and Ongoing Prevention Act (H.R. 3658), clearing the way for a vote in the full House, perhaps in the next two weeks. The bill, sponsored by Reps. Chip Pickering (R-Miss.) and Lois Capps (D-Calif.), authorizes funding to conduct stroke education campaigns; provides critical resources to implement stroke care systems; establishes a clearinghouse to support community efforts to improve stroke care; offers medical professional development programs in new stroke therapies; and assesses the effectiveness of the program to optimize its impact. Sens. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) sponsor the companion bill (S. 1909) in the Senate, but it has not yet seen action.
