NSF Director Resigns

February 13, 2004 - Rita Colwell, Ph.D., Feb. 11 announced her intention to step down as Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), effective Feb. 21. Dr. Colwell will assume the position of Chairman of Canon U.S. Life Sciences, a subsidiary of Canon USA, Inc., whose goal is to identify and develop life-science solutions with potential applications in diagnostics and medical instrumentation. A microbiologist and recognized expert on cholera and infectious diseases, Dr. Colwell will also serve as Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and on the faculty of The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Colwell has served as director of the Foundation since August 1998. The White House has named Arden Bement, Ph.D., a materials engineer and currently head of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), as acting director.
