NIH Releases FY 2004 Stipend Levels

February 13, 2004 - The NIH Feb. 5 released the FY 2004 stipend levels for predoctoral trainees and postdoctoral fellows receiving Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA) (NOT-OD-04-023). The published level for predoctoral trainees and for postdoctoral fellows (with zero years of experience) is $20,772 and $35,568, respectively. Both stipend levels reflect a 4 percent increase from the FY 2003 levels (NOT-OD-03-033). The percent change from FY 2003 to 2004 for a postdoctoral fellow with one year of experience increases 3.8 percent, but the rate of increase declines with increasing years of postdoctoral experience (see table below). These guidelines are effective for awards made on or after Oct. 1, 2003. President Bush's recent FY 2005 budget proposal provides that stipend levels in FY 2005 remain at FY 2004 levels.
