Tauzin, Dunn Announce Retirements

February 6, 2004 - Representative Billy Tauzin (R-La.) Feb. 3 announced he will not seek re-election in November and that he will step down as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, effective Feb. 16. Rep. Tauzin did not rule out retiring from the House entirely prior to the end of the 108th Congress. A 12-term congressman, Rep. Tauzin has chaired the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has authorizing authority over most health care and biomedical research programs, since 2001. Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) is reportedly the most likely successor to the chairman's position.

Also this week, Rep. Jennifer Dunn (R-Wash.) announced she would not seek re-election to the House. First elected to Congress in 1992, Rep. Dunn is a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee and previously was a member of the House Republican Leadership.
