Specter to Hold Hearing On NIH Consulting Deals

January 16, 2004 - The Senate Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee, chaired by Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), will hold a hearing Jan. 22 on allegations surrounding conflicts of interest at the National Institutes of Health made in Dec. 8, 2003, Los Angeles Times story [see Washington Highlights, Dec. 12, 2003]. The tentative witness list includes NIH Director Elias Zerhouni, M.D., former NIH Acting Director Ruth Kirschstein M.D., NIH Clinical Center Director John Gallin, M.D., and National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Director Stephen Katz, M.D., as well as HHS deputy ethics attorney, Ed Swindell, and a representative from the Office of Government Ethics.
