Senator Breaux Announces Retirement

December 19, 2003 - Senator John Breaux (D-La.) announced Dec. 15 his intention to resign from the Senate when his term expires in 2004. Sen. Breaux served 7 terms in the House of Representatives and will complete his third term in the Senate next year. He serves on the Finance, Commerce, Rules and Special Aging committees. A long-time moderate Democrat, Sen. Breaux is a founder of the Democratic Leadership Council, and co-chairman of the Senate Centrist Coalition. He was also one of the two Democrats allowed by Republicans to help negotiate the final version of the recently enacted Medicare prescription drug legislation.
