CMS Administrator Scully Resigns

December 5, 2003 - Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Tom Scully Dec. 2 submitted his resignation to Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, effective Dec. 16. Mr. Scully reportedly indicated his intention to leave the agency in May, but stayed to oversee the completion of the Medicare bill that was approved by Congress in November. A former Office of Management and Budget official in the first Bush Administration and president of the Federation of American Hospitals, Mr. Scully has not announced his future plans, although he has been negotiating with several law firms.
