HHS Awards Disparities Research Grants

October 17, 2003 - The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Oct. 10 announced the awarding of $65.1 million in research grants by the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) in support of health disparities research. NCMHD coordinates NIH's effort to eliminate health disparities among racial and ethnic minority and medically underserved communities.

These FY 2003 awards include: $20 million in New Endowment Program awards to 4 institutions for facilitating minority health and other disparities research; $32 million to 33 new biomedical and behavioral research institutions to begin developing health disparities centers; $4.8 million to 5 institutions under the Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions program; and $8.3 million to 148 health professionals under the Loan Repayment Program to increase the number of individuals conducting clinical or health disparities research.
