NIH Funds Biosafety Labs
October 3, 2003 - The National Institute of Allergy
and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), within the National Institutes
of Health (NIH), Sept. 30 announced
funding for the construction of two National Biocontainment
Laboratories (NBLs) and nine Regional Biocontainment Laboratories
(RBLs). One-time grants of approximately $120 million each
will fund construction of the NBLs, while the RBLs will receive
one-time grants of between $7 and $21 million each in construction
funds. Each institution is also required to provide matching
funds. The awards will support the building of high-level
biosafety labs to house research on effective therapies, vaccines
and diagnostics for diseases caused by agents of bioterror
and for naturally occurring infections.
The NBL awardees are Boston University and University of
Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. RBL's were awarded to Colorado
State University (Fort Collins), Duke University, Tulane University,
University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Chicago
Argonne National Laboratory, University of Medicine and Dentistry
of New Jersey, University of Missouri (Columbia) College of
Veterinary Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, and University
of Tennessee (Memphis).
