HHS Appoints New COGME Members
September 26, 2003 - Department of Health and Human
Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson Sept. 17 announced
the appointment of four new members to the Council on Graduate
Medical Education (COGME). The council advises and makes policy
recommendations to the Secretary and Congress on trends in
the physician workforce, the training of physicians, and financing
of graduate medical education.
COGME's charter is set to expire at the end of FY 2003. A
provision included in Senate-passed version of the FY 2004
Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations
bill would extend funding for the Council through FY 2004.
The following individuals will serve on COGME through 2006:
- Russell G. Robertson, M.D., director, Graduate Medical
Education, Department of Family and Community Medicine,
Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (representing
a national physician organization).
- Rebecca M. Minter, M.D., surgical resident, University
of Florida and Chair of the Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Resident Council, Gainesville,
Florida (representing medical students and house staff
organizations). Dr. Minter is a former Chair of the AAMC's
Organization of Resident Representatives Administrative
Board.
- Earl J. Reisdorff, M.D., FACEP, director, Medical Education,
Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lansing, Michigan (representing
public teaching hospitals).
- Angela Dee Nossett, M.D., executive vice-president,
Committee of Interns and Residents, Wilmington Family
Health Center, Wilmington, California (representing labor
organizations).
